Hello everyone! Today I show you difference between EDATE and EOMONTH functions in Excel step by step with easy examples and video guide in Khmer language.

Both formulas add or subtract months from a start date, but they give very different results. Let's see how to use each function correctly!

Quick Comparison: EDATE vs EOMONTH

Suppose start date in cell A2 is 15/01/2026 (15 January 2026):

FunctionFormulaResultExplanation
EDATE=EDATE(A2, 3)15/04/2026Returns same day 3 months later
EOMONTH=EOMONTH(A2, 3)30/04/2026Returns last day of month 3 months later

Method 1: How to Use EDATE Function

EDATE moves date forward or backward by N months and keeps exact same day.

Formula Syntax:

=EDATE(start_date, months)

Examples:

  • Contract Renewal (3 months later):

    =EDATE(A2, 3)

    15/01/2026 ➔ 15/04/2026

  • Go Back 1 Month Ago:

    =EDATE(A2, -1)

    15/01/2026 ➔ 15/12/2025

Method 2: How to Use EOMONTH Function

EOMONTH (End Of Month) calculates the very last day of the month N months in future or past.

Formula Syntax:

=EOMONTH(start_date, months)

Examples:

  • Last Day of Current Month:

    =EOMONTH(A2, 0)

    15/01/2026 ➔ 31/01/2026

  • Last Day of Next Month:

    =EOMONTH(A2, 1)

    15/01/2026 ➔ 28/02/2026

  • Last Day of Previous Month:

    =EOMONTH(A2, -1)

    15/01/2026 ➔ 31/12/2025

💡 Quick Tip:

  • Find First Day of Next Month: Use =EOMONTH(A2, 0) + 1. It gets end of current month and adds 1 day!
  • Find Total Days in Any Month: Use =DAY(EOMONTH(A2, 0)). It automatically tells you if month has 31, 30, or 28/29 days!
