How to Use DSUM Function in Excel + Tips (Video in Khmer)
Learn how to use DSUM function in Excel step-by-step to sum numbers in a table database matching specific conditions.
Hello everyone! Today i will show you how to use DSUM function in Excel step by step.
What is DSUM Function in Excel?
The DSUM function is a Database formula in Excel that help you add up numbers in a column of a table or database that match specific criteria you set in a criteria range.
Unlike SUMIF or SUMIFS, DSUM uses a separate criteria table headers which makes complex OR / AND condition calculations very easy to set up!

🛠️ Formula Syntax
=DSUM(database, field, criteria)
database: The full range of cells including column header titles (example:A1:C6).field: The column name in quotes (example:"Sales") or column index number (example:3) you want to sum up.criteria: The cell range containing your header titles and condition rules (example:E1:F2).
📋 Sample Data Table (Follow Along)
To test DSUM easily, create this main database table in cell range A1:C6:
| Row | Column A (Salesperson) | Column B (Region) | Column C (Sales) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Salesperson | Region | Sales |
| 2 | Sok | North | $500 |
| 3 | Dara | South | $700 |
| 4 | Lina | North | $800 |
| 5 | Sam | South | $600 |
| 6 | Sopheap | North | $400 |
Criteria Table Setup (Range E1:F2)
Create your criteria box in cell range E1:F2 with identical headers:
| Row | Column E (Region) | Column F (Salesperson) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Region | Salesperson |
| 2 | North |
📊 Simple Examples
Example 1: Sum Sales for North Region
In criteria box E1:F2, put "North" under Region (Cell E2):
=DSUM(A1:C6, "Sales", E1:F2)
Calculation: Sok ($500) + Lina ($800) + Sopheap ($400) = $1,700
Example 2: DSUM with AND Condition (North Region AND Sales > 500)
Set Criteria Range E1:F2:
- Cell
E2(Region) ="North" - Cell
F2(Sales) =">500"
Formula:
=DSUM(A1:C6, "Sales", E1:F2)
👉 Result: $800 (Matches Lina only).
Example 3: DSUM with OR Condition (North Region OR South Region)
Set Criteria Range E1:E3 (Using 2 rows):
- Cell
E2="North" - Cell
E3="South"
Formula:
=DSUM(A1:C6, "Sales", E1:E3)
👉 Result: $3,000 (Sums all rows in North OR South).
⚡ DSUM vs SUMIFS Comparison
| Feature | DSUM | SUMIFS |
|---|---|---|
| Criteria Source | Separate cell range with column headers | Written directly inside formula |
| Complex OR Logic | Super Easy (Add multiple criteria rows) | Requires combining SUM(SUMIFS(...)) |
| Best Used For | Database tables & dynamic criteria boxes | Quick standard formula calculations |

💡 Quick Tips for DSUM Function:
- Headers Must Match Exactly: Column headers in your criteria table (like
"Region"or"Sales") must match your main database headers exactly!- Avoid Empty Criteria Rows: If your criteria range includes an empty blank row,
DSUMwill sum ALL rows in your database!
