What is WORKDAY Function in Excel?

The WORKDAY function is a Date formula in Excel. It help you calculate the target date after adding (or subtracting) a specific number of working days from a start date.

WORKDAY formula automatically skips weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and any public holidays you list in your sheet!

🛠️ Formula Syntax & Parameters

The WORKDAY formula syntax look like this:

=WORKDAY(start_date, days, [holidays])
  • start_date: The starting date (example: 2026-09-01 or cell A2).
  • days: Number of working days to add (use positive number like 10 for future date, or negative number like -5 for past date).
  • [holidays] (Optional): List of holiday dates to skip (example cell range E2:E5).

📋 Sample Data & Simple Examples

Example 1: Add Working Days (Calculate Due Date)

Suppose Start Date is 2026-09-01 (Tuesday) in Cell A2, and you want to add 10 working days:

=WORKDAY(A2, 10)

👉 Result: 2026-09-15
(Excel automatically skips 2 weekends: Saturday Sep 5, Sunday Sep 6, Saturday Sep 12, Sunday Sep 13!)

Example 2: Add Working Days with Public Holidays List

Suppose you add 10 working days from Cell A2, but cell range E2:E3 contains 2 Public Holidays:

  • Cell E2 = 2026-09-07 (Holiday 1)
  • Cell E3 = 2026-09-08 (Holiday 2)
=WORKDAY(A2, 10, E2:E3)

👉 Result: 2026-09-17
(Excel skips weekends PLUS the 2 public holiday dates in your list!)

Example 3: Subtract Working Days (Find Past Date)

To calculate 5 working days BEFORE Start Date in Cell A2:

=WORKDAY(A2, -5)

👉 Result: 2026-08-25 (Excel counts backwards and skips weekends!)
