Hello everyone! Today I show you very easy step-by-step how to convert total seconds into hour, minute, and second format (hh:mm:ss) in Excel.

In this video, we use very simple formula and custom cell formatting.

🛠️ Easy Step-by-Step Formula

Step 1: Write Divide Formula

Because 1 day have 24 hours x 60 minutes x 60 seconds = 86,400 seconds, you just divide total seconds cell by 86400:

=A2/86400

Step 2: Format Cell to Time Format (hh:mm:ss)

After press Enter, Excel will show small decimal number. Don't worry! Change cell format like this:

1. Select your calculation cell.
2. Press shortcut Ctrl + 1 (or Right Click -> Format Cells).
3. Go to Category -> click Custom.
4. In Type box, type hh:mm:ss and click OK.

💡 Pro Tips

1. If Total Hours More Than 24 Hours: Use [h]:mm:ss with square bracket [h]. If you use normal hh:mm:ss, Excel will reset hour count to 00 after 24 hours! [h] keep total total hours accumulated.
2. Convert Direct to Text with TEXT() Formula: If you want output directly as text without manual cell formatting, use formula:

   =TEXT(A2/86400, "hh:mm:ss")
   

3. No Leading Zero for Hour: Use h:mm:ss if you prefer 1:05:20 instead of 01:05:20.
