🛠️ Formula Syntax

=AVERAGEIF(range, criteria, [average_range])
  • range: The range of cells you want to check for conditions.
  • criteria: The condition you want to check (e.g., ">50", "North", or cell reference).
  • average_range (optional): The range of numbers to average. If omitted, range itself is used.

📋 Sample Data (Follow Along)

Create this simple table in cells A1:B6:

RowColumn A (Region)Column B (Sales)
1RegionSales
2North$500
3South$700
4North$800
5South$600
6North$400

📊 Simple Examples

Example 1: Average Sales in "North" Region

Use cell C2 to put criteria:

=AVERAGEIF(A2:A6, C2, B2:B6)

👉 Calculation:

  • Condition: Region = "North"
  • Numbers to average: $500, $800, $400
  • (500 + 800 + 400) / 3 = $566.67
    👉 Result: $566.67

Example 2: Average Sales Greater Than $600

=AVERAGEIF(B2:B6, ">600")

👉 Calculation:

  • Condition: Sales > $600
  • Numbers: $700, $800
  • (700 + 800) / 2 = $750
    👉 Result: $750

Example 3: Average Sales in "South" Region (Using Column Index)

=AVERAGEIF(A2:A6, "South", B2:B6)

👉 Result: $650

💡 Quick Tips for AVERAGEIF

  1. Text Criteria Need Quotes: When using text (like "North") as criteria, you must wrap it in double quotes!
  2. Operators in Quotes: Comparison operators like >, <, >=, <=, <> also need to be inside double quotes (e.g., ">100")!
  3. Blank Cells: AVERAGEIF ignores blank cells (doesn't count them as 0).
  4. Criteria Range vs Average Range: If you omit average_range, Excel will average the range itself! Make sure these ranges match in size and order.
