Formula
=DPRODUCT(database, field, criteria)

Hello everyone! Today we will look at the DPRODUCT() function in Excel. It is a powerful "Database" function that allows you to multiply values in a column, but only if they match the specific criteria you set!

🛠️ What is the DPRODUCT Function?

The DPRODUCT function multiplies the numbers in a specific column (field) of a database (table) that match conditions you specify in a criteria range.

If you've ever wanted to do a "PRODUCTIF" (which doesn't exist in standard Excel!), DPRODUCT is exactly what you need.

Formula Syntax:

=DPRODUCT(database, field, criteria)
  • database (Required): The range of cells that makes up your table, including the column headers (e.g., A1:C10).
  • field (Required): The column you want to multiply. You can type the column header name in quotes (e.g., "Qty") or the column number (e.g., 3 for the 3rd column).
  • criteria (Required): The range of cells that contains your conditions. It must include a column header and at least one cell below it for the condition.

📊 Short & Clear Example

Imagine you have a small table of items, categories, and quantities:

ABC
1ItemCategoryQty
2AppleFruit2
3BananaFruit5
4CarrotVeggie3
5AppleFruit4

Setting up Criteria (E1:E2): In E1, type Category (The Header). In E2, type Fruit (The Condition).

The Formula:

=DPRODUCT(A1:C5, "Qty", E1:E2)
  • Result: 40
  • Why? It looks at the "Category" column and finds all "Fruit". The Fruit quantities are 2, 5, and 4. It then multiplies them together: 2 * 5 * 4 = 40.

💡 Easy Pro Tips

  1. Multiple Criteria (AND): To check multiple conditions at the same time, place them side-by-side in your criteria range. (e.g., Category = Fruit AND Item = Apple).
  2. Multiple Criteria (OR): To check conditions where either can be true, place them on top of each other in the criteria range.
  3. Keep Headers Identical: Your criteria headers must exactly match the headers in your database range, otherwise DPRODUCT will not work!
