Formula
=FIXED(number, [decimals], [no_commas])

Hello everyone! Today we will look at the FIXED() function in Excel. It is a quick and easy way to round a number and change it into a text string, with or without commas!

🛠️ What is the FIXED Function?

The FIXED function rounds a number to the decimal places you choose, formats it with a period and commas (like 1,234.56), and returns the result as text.

Formula Syntax:

=FIXED(number, [decimals], [no_commas])
  • number (Required): The number you want to round and convert to text.
  • decimals (Optional): How many digits to the right of the decimal point. (Default is 2). If negative, it rounds to the left of the decimal point.
  • no_commas (Optional): TRUE prevents commas in the text (e.g., 1234.56), FALSE or omitted includes commas (e.g., 1,234.56).

📊 Short & Clear Examples

💡 Easy Pro Tips

  1. Text Combination: Use FIXED when you want to join a rounded number into a sentence. For example: ="We sold " & FIXED(A2, 0) & " units." prevents ugly unrounded numbers from showing up in your text.
  2. FIXED vs DOLLAR: FIXED is almost identical to the DOLLAR function, but FIXED allows you to remove commas using the no_commas argument, and it never adds a currency symbol.
  3. Cannot Calculate: Remember, because FIXED returns text, you cannot use the result inside math functions like SUM().
