We want to convert student score in cell A2 into letter grade:

=IFS(A2>=90, "A", A2>=80, "B", A2>=70, "C", A2>=60, "D", A2>=50, "E", A2<50, "F")
Score (Cell A2)Formula ResultExplanation
95AScore >= 90 is TRUE
85BScore >= 80 is TRUE
75CScore >= 70 is TRUE
65DScore >= 60 is TRUE
52EScore >= 50 is TRUE
40FScore < 50 is TRUE

Example 2: Sales Bonus Rate

If sales total is in cell B2, calculate bonus percentage:

=IFS(B2>=10000, "15% Bonus", B2>=5000, "10% Bonus", B2>=1000, "5% Bonus", TRUE, "No Bonus")

Example 3: Shipping Fee based on Order Total

=IFS(AND(A2>=80, B2>=80), "Distinction", AND(A2>=50, B2>=50), "Pass", TRUE, "Fail")

💡 Quick Tips for IFS Function:

  1. Use TRUE at the end as default fallback: Always put TRUE, "Default Result" as final pair. If no condition matches and you don't add TRUE, Excel will return #N/A error!
  2. Order is very important: Excel check condition from left to right. Once it find first TRUE condition, it stop checking immediately! Always put highest or most specific condition first.
